In many ways, Miami is an excellent place to live. In terms of health and wellness, it has beautiful parks and recreation areas for getting exercise, health-conscious businesses and restaurants, and a variety of new food sources. Unfortunately, Miami also has a serious public health issue. According to a report on Florida's community needs from 2019-2021, heart disease is the leading cause of death in Miami, followed by strokes at number 3 and diabetes at number 7. In the vast majority of cases, these conditions can be prevented or managed through qualified nutrition coaching.
Though the city of Miami has adequate healthcare infrastructure and resources, vulnerable communities still experience barriers to accessing care. In Miami-Dade County, the number of uninsured people was 33% in 2022, disproportionately higher than the national 12% average. This lack of resources can make it difficult for people to travel to a doctor or nutritionist's office to receive a consultation.
Chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's, back problems, asthma, obesity, allergy, and depression are the leading cause of death and health challenges worldwide. In 2014, the leading cause of death in the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinic’s (UMH) top five primary service areas was heart disease.
Registered dieticians and nutritionists are typically trained to help those with chronic illnesses manage their disease, but Miami's infrastructure often struggles to meet the demands of its residents in terms of healthcare.
