Zena Greens Review From a Dietitian: Is This Green Powder Worth Trying?

At Top Nutrition Coaching, our reviews are authentic, and we only recommend brands we trust. We do not earn affiliate commissions on any purchases, keeping our recommendations unbiased.

Zena Greens is one of the newest green powders on the market. It’s already generated a lot of buzz, thanks to the eye-catching packaging, attractive price, and a formula with 70+ ingredients.

As a registered dietitian constantly looking out for ways to help my clients improve their nutrition, I wanted to find out if Zena Greens is a viable way to fill nutrient gaps. In this comprehensive review, I’ll share everything I learned during my deep dive into Zena Greens, from purported health benefits and safety to taste and pricing, as well as my verdict on whether I’d recommend this greens powder to my clients.

Zena Key Features

Don’t have time to read the full review? Here’s a rundown of everything you should know about Zena Greens:

  • What is Zena Greens? Zena Greens is a greens powder supplement made with fruit and vegetable powders, herbal extracts, functional mushrooms, fiber, prebiotics, probiotics, and a small amount of plant-based protein.
  • How should you use Zena Greens? Like all greens powders, Zena Greens is designed to be mixed with cold water. Alternatively, you can blend it with juice or smoothies, or even sprinkle it into recipes.
  • How much does Zena cost? A 30-serving tub of Zena Greens costs $27.99, or $22.39 with a monthly subscription. Even with a subscription, shipping costs $5.99 for orders under $35.
  • What are the alleged health benefits? According to the manufacturer, Zena Greens “helps fill nutrition gaps and support digestive health.” It also contains antioxidant-rich berries, super mushrooms with adaptogenic properties, and ingredients that support hydration.
  • What does Zena taste like? Although this greens powder has a very sweet taste due to stevia, many customers find the three fruity Zena Greens flavors pleasant enough to drink, especially when mixed with ice water.
  • Is Zena safe for everyone? Zena Greens undergoes third-party testing and is vegetarian, non-GMO, USDA Organic, and free from gluten, dairy, and soy (though it is made in "a facility that also processes tree nuts, peanuts, soy, and wheat.") You should consult your doctor before starting any new supplement.
  • Are there better Zena alternatives? Although I was impressed by the variety of organic superfoods in Zena Greens, it’s not one of my favorite greens powders. I prefer the taste and ingredients list of Live it Up Super Greens, while for flavor options, Bloom Greens & Superfoods is hard to beat.

My Overall Thoughts on Zena Greens

My initial impression of Zena Greens was positive, and there are many things to like about this greens powder.

  1. It’s a high-quality organic product free from gluten, dairy, soy, and added sugars.
  2. Zena Greens features over 70 ingredients, from leafy greens and antioxidant-rich berries to adaptogens and super mushrooms, plus fiber, prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes.
  3. Zena Greens has relatively positive customer reviews and seems to taste better than some other greens powders, despite the excessive sweetness provided by stevia extract.
  4. At $22.39 per month with a subscription (plus shipping), Zena is one of the more affordable greens powders I’ve come across.

This is an undeniably impressive list of ingredients, yet having dozens of superfoods in a single 8-gram serving could mean that the ingredient amounts are so tiny that their potency has been diluted. I can’t help but wonder whether the low price tag reflects a lack of effective dosages.

Likewise, Zena Greens doesn’t list the vitamins and minerals it provides, leaving customers guessing about the micronutrient content.

And strangely for a product designed to support digestive health, it doesn’t mention the quantity of probiotics (in contrast, Suja Greens offers 1 billion CFU of probiotics, while Live it Up has 5 billion CFU).

Ingredient Analysis

With dozens of ingredients, Zena Greens contains the most recognizable superfoods, plus plenty of lesser-known fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Zena Ingredient Analysis

Organic Greens, Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs Blend

This blend comprises the majority of a scoop of Zena Greens. There are nutrient-dense greens like spirulina, chlorella, kale, carrot, oat grass, moringa, barley grass, and sea vegetables. It also features ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb linked to stress relief and healthy sleep habits. Organic green tea leaf extract is another ingredient in this blend and likely provides a small amount of caffeine

You’ll also find numerous sources of plant-based protein (e.g., brown rice, pea, sacha inchi, and pumpkin seed), though the total amount of protein in one serving of Zena Greens is minimal, at just 2 grams.

Organic Hydration Blend

The hydration blend in Zena Greens features broccoli, cabbage, bell pepper, celery, and lemon juice powders, along with coconut water powder. These ingredients, particularly the coconut water, are likely to provide numerous electrolytes. However, the main hydration provided by Zena Greens comes from the glass of water or juice that you mix the powder with.

Organic Berry Antioxidant Blend

Antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E, minerals like selenium, copper, and zinc, and plant-derived compounds like polyphenols and flavonoids, can help neutralize the oxidative effects of free radicals on our cells. Zena Greens features a diverse array of antioxidant-rich powdered berries including goji, camu camu, acai, cranberry, and acerola.

Organic Super Mushroom Blend

You’ll find a dozen “super” mushrooms in every serving of Zena Greens, including reishi, lion’s mane, shiitake, turkey tail, and cordyceps. These so-called functional mushrooms may help fight fatigue and enhance mental alertness, though relatively high doses (not found in Zena) would be needed to have a discernible impact.

Organic Fiber, Prebiotic, Probiotic and Digestive Enzymes Blend

Zena Greens features numerous ingredients that have been linked to a healthy digestive system, including fiber, prebiotics, three types of digestive enzymes, and seven probiotic strains. However, unlike most greens powders, the Supplement Facts do not specify the amount of probiotics (typically listed in CFU, or colony-forming units) in each serving.

Zena’s Health Claims

I like that Zena Nutrition doesn’t make grandiose health claims about their products. The company doesn’t try to mislead customers and clearly recognizes that greens powders are meant to provide nutrition support rather than treat specific ailments or conditions.

Instead, the Zena website states that the product is designed for “hydration” and “digestive support.” Here are my thoughts on the potential health implications of adding Zena Greens to your diet.

Zena Health Claims

Hydration

Having a blend of ingredients specifically designed to support hydration is one of the most unique things about Zena Greens. Yet, the manufacturer doesn’t discuss how these ingredients can help hydrate your body. As a nutritionist, I’m well aware that in their natural form, green vegetables like celery, bell pepper, and cabbage have a high water content, yet this doesn’t mean that vegetable powders offer the same support for hydration.

Instead, Zena’s main hydration benefits appear to come from electrolytes (e.g., sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus) provided by coconut water powder. When combined with water, sufficient dietary consumption of these minerals may promote a healthy fluid balance, nutrient absorption, and normal nerve and muscle function.

Generally speaking, the most useful aspect of greens powders for hydration support is that they are usually taken by mixing a scoop of powder into a glass of water, juice, milk, or another beverage, thus increasing your daily fluid intake (which should be at least 3.7 liters for men and 2.7 liters for women).

Digestion

Zena Greens has several ingredients that could help support healthy digestion. One scoop of greens powder provides 3 grams of dietary fiber, 12% of the recommended Daily Value. Getting enough dietary fiber is essential for digestive regularity, and a daily glass of Zena Greens seems like a positive step in that direction.

The enzyme blend in Zena Greens could also benefit gut health, as it includes cellulase, amylase, and protease, which help break down starches and proteins and promote nutrient absorption.

To help nourish the microbiome, Zena Greens contains organic inulin, a prebiotic fiber known to promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, and seven strains of probiotics. However, the quantity of probiotics isn’t mentioned anywhere on the label or website. For comparison, most greens powders contain at least 1 billion colony-forming units of probiotics, while some of the best greens powders for gut health contain at least 5 billion, including Live it Up Super Greens, AG1, and Vibrant Health Green Vibrance.

Immunity and Energy Support

One of the main reasons people take greens powders is to promote a healthy immune system and normal energy levels.

Many of the ingredients in Zena Greens have been linked to immune health, including dark leafy greens, grasses, and antioxidant-rich berries. Rich in essential vitamins and minerals, these superfoods are widely lauded for their potential to support your body’s natural defenses through a healthy diet. However, the powders and extracts in Zena Greens are unlikely to provide the same immune-supporting benefits as whole fruits and vegetables.

When it comes to energy balance, Zena Greens features several ingredients that could contribute to feeling alert and focused. For example, the organic green tea leaf extract in Zena Greens likely provides a small amount of caffeine. As long as you don’t experience unpleasant caffeine sensitivity symptoms, this might help you feel more awake and energized, though it’s likely that the amount is too small to have a noticeable effect.

Additionally, functional mushrooms like cordyceps, reishi, and lion's mane and adaptogenic herbs like maca root, Shatavari, and ashwagandha may also contribute to feelings of sustained energy throughout the day, while potentially helping you feel calm and better able to cope with stress. However, much more research is needed to understand adaptogens’ potential to fight stress and fatigue, especially when considering the tiny doses found in Zena Greens.

Pricing and Discounts

Compared to many other green powders, Zena Greens is reasonably priced at $27.99 for a 30-serving tub. Other pricing to know:

  • Signing up for a subscription saves you 20% for a monthly cost of $22.39, or $0.75 per serving.
  • Zena Greens is also available in stick packs, which are $32.99 for 30 single servings, or $26.39 for a monthly subscription.
  • Potential customers should note that regardless of whether you order once or are a monthly subscriber, you’ll need to pay a $5.99 shipping fee for any order under $35.

If you’re basing your choice of greens powder solely on the number of superfoods it contains, Zena Greens is a good buy, as it features over 70 ingredients. However, with so many superfoods in a single serving, you’re not getting the same concentration as similarly priced greens powders with more streamlined ingredient lists.

The cost of other greens powder brands with subscriptions:

  • AG1 - $79 per month
  • Amazing Grass Greens Blend - $31.99 per month
  • Bloom Greens & Superfoods - $31.49 per month
  • Live it Up Super Greens - $39.99 per month

It’s also worth noting that many companies (including Live it Up) offer free shipping on all purchases, regardless of order size or subscriber status.

Zena Nutrition offers a decent return policy, giving customers 90 days to return any unopened product for a full refund, minus the shipping cost. Opened containers in which less than one-fifth has been used can be returned for a 50% refund (again, minus shipping fees).

Customer Testimonials

As Zena Greens is a new addition to the greens powder market, it doesn’t have as many customer reviews as more established supplements. However, a close look at the reviews on the Zena Nutrition website reveals common themes about this greens powder’s taste, texture, and results.

Taste and Texture

Many Zena Greens customers have a mainly positive opinion about the taste and appreciate the choice of fruit flavors (Mixed Berry, Mango, and Green Apple).

“The delightful Mixed Berry flavor adds a refreshing taste to every sip, making it a lovely and satisfying part of my day.” (Francine T.)

Quite a few reviewers mentioned that the taste of powdered vegetables, herbs, and mushrooms was fairly noticeable, which perhaps isn’t surprising for a greens powder with over 70 ingredients. The texture also frustrated some customers, who said they had to mix it repeatedly to remove the graininess.

“It stays a little gritty which isn’t ideal, but I try to drink it quickly. The flavor is OK. You can definitely still taste that it is a greens drink. Overall, the ingredients are great. I wish it wasn’t so gritty and tasted a little better, but it is a good product.” (John)

Serving Zena Greens with ice or stirring it into juice or a smoothie seemed to help disguise the “green” taste and grainy consistency. However, while many commenters approved of the lack of sugar in the formula, the excessively sweet taste of stevia was a dealbreaker for some reviewers.

“After increasing the water amount, it actually DID taste like berries & was not too sweet. The manufacturer COULD decrease the sweetener used though.” (Pam)

“The supplement information indicates that this powder should be mixed with water. However, for me, I find it much too sweet to drink as a beverage in this way and so to mask that sweet flavor, I plan on using it in smoothies instead.” (Paulina)

Reported Results

In many reviews, customers praised the convenience of the stick packs and the wide variety of superfoods and other healthy ingredients in Zena Greens. They were also pleased with Zena’s manufacturing standards and USDA Organic certification.

When describing their results after adding Zena Greens to their daily routine, some people said they felt like they had more energy or were experiencing less bloating or more regular bowel movements.

“I like to add it to my smoothies to get an extra boost. It seems to improve my energy and I don't crash in the afternoons anymore.” (Kali K.)

“Great for gut health and no more constipation!! Love the individual packs, super good on the go!" (DS)

One of the most frequent comments was that customers felt good adding Zena Greens to their diet to increase their nutrient intake, even if it didn’t result in noticeable effects on their health and wellness.

“The texture may be an issue for some (it's grainy), but for me it's not a problem. I like this stuff. I don't know that it's showing me any signs of health benefits yet as I haven't used all of the sticks, but I don't find that it's hurting me at all.” (Sunny L.)

“I feel good knowing my body is reaping the benefits of pre & probiotics, antioxidants, and necessary hydration.” (Jen S.)

Weighing In: Is Zena Greens Worth It?

At first glance, Zena Greens seems like the complete package – an organic daily greens powder with over 70 ingredients, including enzymes, prebiotics, and probiotics, at a reasonable price (less than $1 per serving with a subscription).

Yet when I took a closer look at the Supplement Facts, several issues began to bother me. Although Zena Greens contains some of the planet’s best superfoods, the sheer quantity of ingredients and the use of proprietary blends means that customers have no way of knowing how much of each you’re getting in a single scoop.

Similarly, the lack of information about the vitamin and mineral content and the CFU of probiotics suggests that this greens powder isn’t as nutrient-dense as I initially thought. It’s also worth remembering that no supplement, including greens powders, can replace whole fruits and vegetables in your diet.

That being said, I do think Zena Greens is a strong product in other ways. The USDA Organic certification is a definite plus, and I appreciate the convenience of stick packs for forming healthy habits on the go. Although some customers find it too sweet due to stevia, others seem to enjoy the taste, and it doesn’t have the bitter, grassy flavor of some greens powders.

Of course, everyone has their own health and nutrition goals, and if a daily glass of Zena Greens helps you drink more water and get more fruits and vegetables in your diet, I think that’s very positive. However, having researched dozens of greens powders, there are others I recommend over Zena Greens if you’re interested in increasing your intake of superfoods and supporting your digestive health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Adding a new supplement to your diet is a big step that shouldn’t be taken without proper consideration. Here are my answers to some of the most common questions about Zena Greens and green powders in general.

How long does it take for greens to start working?

Individual results with greens powders can vary significantly, with some people reporting that they quickly noticed a change in their digestive regularity, bloating, energy levels, appetite, or immune health. For others, it can take longer, often up to a few weeks, for the increased nutrient intake to make a difference to your perceived wellness. The effects of green powders also depend on the brand, your baseline health and nutrition, and many other factors.

Are Zena super greens healthy?

Although I have some concerns about the effectiveness of the superfoods in Zena Greens due to their small quantities, I do consider this a healthy product. It has an excellent list of ingredients, nearly all of which are touted for their potential health and nutrition benefits. It also contains useful dietary enzymes, prebiotics, and probiotics.

Zena Greens is organic, sugar-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free, with 20 calories and 4 grams of total carbs per serving, so it’s suitable for nearly all diets.

What do Zena Greens taste like?

Zena Greens is available in three flavors: Mixed Berry, Mango, and Green Apple. Compared to many green powders, Zena Greens has a relatively pleasant and fruity taste. Even so, many customers prefer to drink Zena Greens with juice or a smoothie to hide the taste of the vegetables, mushrooms, and herbs, while others mix it with ice water. Zena Greens is sweetened with stevia, which some say makes it excessively sweet and leaves a lingering (and sometimes unpleasant) aftertaste.

Which super greens powder is the best?

As everyone has unique health and nutrition needs and objectives, the “best” greens powder for you may not be the best for someone else. Generally speaking, though, the best greens powders contain effective doses of around 20 superfoods, with a focus on leafy greens like kale, spinach, broccoli, chlorella, spirulina, and wheat grass. Many also contain prebiotics, probiotics, and dietary enzymes for digestive support.

Some of the most popular greens powders include Bloom Greens & Superfoods, AG1, Live it Up Super Greens, Vibrant Health Green Vibrance, and Nested Naturals Super Greens.

About the first-gen futures scholarship

Scholarship award available for both college and high school students
Being the first in your family to attend college is an inspiring feat, often with its own unique challenges. First-generation students may not have the same guidance in navigating parts of the higher education system as other students, such as the application process, obtaining financial aid, and even what to expect in college itself.

Financial constraints can also be a significant roadblock for such students, which may limit their choices, force them to balance jobs, family responsibilities, and school work all at once, and make the college experience much more stressful.

Despite these struggles, first-generation college students have proven time and again to be extremely resilient, determined, and hard-working. They embody a spirit of ambition and perseverance as they work toward creating the future they want for themselves and their families.

The First-Gen Futures Scholarship aims to recognize and support exceptional students who are overcoming the barriers of being the first in their families to attend college. By providing financial assistance to deserving individuals, we seek to alleviate some financial stress so that these students can focus more on their studies.

About the Annual Hero's Legacy Scholarship

Scholarship award available for both college and high school students
Military families embody resilience, strength, and unwavering support for their loved ones in uniform. There are many overlooked sacrifices they make that should be recognized and rewarded. Military families endure extended deployments, adjust to new environments, and face uncertainty on a frequent basis.

The children of military families often adapt to new schools and environments, embodying the values of adaptability and perseverance, and experience the emotional toll of their loved one being deployed in dangerous situations.

The Heroes' Legacy Scholarship is a tribute to the extraordinary dedication and sacrifice of military families who stand alongside their loved ones in service to our country. Unfortunately, there are many struggles that military families endure while a parent or guardian serves in the armed forces.

In recognition of the burden higher education can place on military families, this scholarship seeks to give back to these dedicated families to honor their sacrifices.

Any high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student who is a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident and the child of at least one parent who has served in the U.S. military may apply for this scholarship.
